In the Communications Directorate at the Department for Work & Pensions, we blog about thought leadership, current affairs and matters we hope will be of interest. I've decided to use my KHub blog to share them with the team and more widely. Many years ago, I undertook leadership training with the Hay group and was profiled through 360 degree reviews and other techniques to see how I fared... See more

In the Communications Directorate at the Department for Work & Pensions, we blog about thought leadership, current affairs and matters we hope will be of interest. I've decided to use my KHub blog to share them with the team and more widely. Here's my first one since joining back in February 2015. ---------------------------------------------- I'm relatively new to DWP (and govt) and... In many organisations, social media is still the preserve of the communications team and, where it's embraced, tends to be used for external engagement only. The social networking tool Yammer has been used internally by some organisations but with differing degrees of success. It's at least a start but what if you're looking to bring together people, exchange knowledge and expertise,... See more

We recently ran a discussion in the Online Facilitators' Community on KHub about using social media to grow your group. Dimple Rathod helpfully summarised the main points. Anymore tips to add? Q1. How can you identify the influencers on social media? Identify who the offline influencers are, search for their online persona, and find out who they are connected to. Use simple... See more

In an earlier post I spoke about how I thought the unconference part of LocalGovCamp 2014 was all about mobilising the local government sector and embracing change. The Friday was focused on Leaders - councillors and chief executives - and was equally as inspiring. Here's a short video explaining why (and it's not just me talking!)   To see all the lightening talks from... See more

In my earlier post, I outlined the importance of considering social value in everything we do on Knowledge Hub.   I'm going to keep this short as I want to make it clear what KHub is all about.   Everyone (and I mean everyone) can come and join KHub for free. Please spread the word!   Groups that are open or restricted are free (we will continue charging for private... See more

I don't want you to think me patronising with my choice of blog title. I've been a proud member of LocalGov Digital since the beginning when we were an underground movement, bigging ourselves up, running on passion and with plenty of smoke & mirrors thrown in to get noticed.    There are going to be lots of blog posts (and rightly so) about LocalGovCamp so what I really want... The Digital Leaders North West network will be the third high profile local Digital Leaders network to be formed. Through sponsorship from Knowledge Hub, we will provide a local programme of free events and networking drinks open to all sectors - public, private and not-for-profit. Our webpage sets out some of our ambitions which I’m sure will grow in time as the network becomes more... See more

Why am I writing this now? Well it's six months since myself and three of the team (Michael, Dimple and Liz) moved from the LGA to CapacityGrid. I think we're lucky to have landed in a place where everyone around us wants Knowledge Hub to succeed. True, it's been challenging working out the best way to make Knowledge Hub financially viable without public funding and, yes, we've had to pivot... See more

It is eighteen months now since central government announced reforms to policy making with an action to make ‘open’ policy making the default.  Despite its important role in the process as the interface between government and citizens, there was no specific mention of local government. In an LGC article in July 2012, Anthony Zacharzewski from Demsoc challenged local government to ‘show... See more

I 'm a woman who started out on the front foot. I went to an all girls' school and was one of the few women on my maths degree course - because as the theory goes, there were no boys in class to potentially intimidate me. Since that time, I've gained a few degrees, worked at some amazing places and yes, I've even clinked glasses with our digital hero Tim Berners-Lee. The only... See more

I've read some great blogs about the success of Councillor Camp. Indeed, good on Futuregov for forcing the agenda and bringing together in one room possibly the most councillors EVER to talk about the importance of social media and digital in local government. Now, I was there too and did feel truly inspired. (The hashtag, #cllrcamp, trended at number 1 for a while - amazingly, above... See more

I was delighted to meet Tom Riordan (Chief Executive of Leeds City Council) for the first time at the LGA's 2012 Annual Conference and even more pleased that he agreed to give an interview. He's a social media giant amongst local government senior officers and offered some candid advice that is relevant to us all.  Despite many conference sessions focusing on the bleak funding... I had the pleasure of catching Cllr Tim Cheetham at the LGA's 2012 Annual Conference to talk about progress in the uptake of social media amongst councillors since last year. (He also gave me some of his thoughts on the conference too!)   See more

The LGA's Annual Conference is over for another year and we're all exhausted but elated with how it went. We're particularly pleased with the online elements which make us even more positive about the uptake of social media and digital channels across the whole of local government, particularly senior officers and councillors. We'll be carrying out a full After Action Review to see how we can... See more

With just over two weeks to go until the LGA's Annual Conference in Birmingham, things are getting mighty busy in the communications department here. Last year we experimented with social media properly for the first time. We admit we were a bit scattergun in our approach; blogging and tweeting about anything and everything. We think that was a bit too much. This year we have a more... See more
